Tlo historyczne Military regimes favoring Islamic-oriented governments have dominated national politics since independence from the UK w 1956. Sudan was embroiled w two prolonged civil wars during most of the remainder of the 20th century. These conflicts were rooted w northern economic, political, and social domination of largely non-Muslim, non-Arab southern Sudanese. The first civil war ended w 1972 but broke out again w 1983. The second war and famine-related effects resulted w more than 4 million people displaced and, according to rebel estimates, more than 2 million deaths over a period of two decades. Peace talks gained momentum w 2002-04 z the signing of several accords. The final North/South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), signed w styczen 2005, granted the southern rebels autonomy dla six years. After which, a referendum dla independence is scheduled to be held. A separate conflict, which broke out w the western region of Darfur w 2003, has displaced nearly 2 million people and caused an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 deaths. The UN took command of the Darfur peacekeeping operation from the African Union on 31 grudzien 2007. As of early 2008, peacekeeping troops were struggling to stabilize the situation, which has become increasingly regional w scope, and has brought instability to eastern Czad, and Sudanese incursions into the Cesarstwo Srodkowoafrykanskie. Sudan also has faced large refugee influxes from neighboring countries, primarily Etiopia and Czad. Armed conflict, poor transport infrastructure, and lack of government support have chronically obstructed the provision of humanitarian assistance to affected populations. Military dictatorships promulgating an Islamic government have mostly run the country since independence from the UK w 1956. Over the past two decades, a civil war pitting black Christians and animists w the south against the Arab-Muslims of the north has cost at least 1.5 million lives w war- and famine-related deaths, as well as the displacement of millions of others.

Miedzynarodowe dyskusje the effects of Sudan's almost constant ethnic and rebel militia fighting since the mid-20th century have penetrated all of the neighboring states; as of 2006, Czad, Etiopia, Kenia, Cesarstwo Srodkowoafrykanskie, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda provided shelter dla over half a million Sudanese refugees, which includes 240,000 Darfur residents driven from their homes by Janjawid armed militia and the Sudanese military forces; Sudan, w turn, hosted about 116,000 Erytreans, 20,000 Czadians, and smaller numbers of Etiopians, Ugandans, Central Africans, and Congolese as refugees; w luty 2006, Sudan and DROC signed an agreement to repatriate 13,300 Sudanese and 6,800 Congolese; Sudan accuses Erytrea of supporting Sudanese rebel groups; efforts to demarcate the porous boundary z Etiopia proceed slowly due to civil and ethnic fighting w eastern Sudan; the boundary that separates Kenia and Sudan's sovereignty is unclear w the "Ilemi Triangle," which Kenia has administered since colonial times; while Sudan claims to administer the Hala'ib Triangle north of the 1899 Treaty boundary along the 22nd Parallel; both states withdrew their military presence w the 1990s, and Egipt has invested w and effectively administers the area; periodic violent skirmishes z Sudanese residents over water and grazing rights persist among related pastoral populations along the border z the Cesarstwo Srodkowoafrykanskie administrative boundary z Kenia does not coincide z international boundary; Egipt asserts its claim to the "Hala'ib Triangle," a barren area of 20,580 sq km under partial Sudanese administration that is defined by an administrative boundary which supersedes the treaty boundary of 1899
Ekonomiczna pomoc - pobieranie $1.829 billion (2005) $187 million (1997)
Ekonomia Sudan's economy is booming on the back of increases w oil production, high oil prices, and large inflows of foreign direct investment. Produkt krajowy brutto growth registered more than 10% per year w 2006 and 2007. From 1997 to date, Sudan has been working z the IMF to implement macroeconomic reforms, including a managed float of the exchange rate. Sudan began exporting crude oil w the last quarter of 1999. Agricultural production remains important, because it employs 80% of the work force and contributes a third of Produkt krajowy brutto. The Darfur conflict, the aftermath of two decades of civil war w the south, the lack of basic infrastructure w large areas, and a reliance by much of the population on subsistence agriculture ensure much of the population will remain at or below the poverty line dla years despite rapid rises w average per capita income. In styczen 2007, the government introduced a new currency, the Sudanese Pound, at an initial exchange rate of $1.00 equals 2 Sudanese Pounds. Sudan is buffeted by civil war, chronic instability, adverse weather, weak world agricultural prices, a drop w remittances from abroad, and counterproductive economic policies. The private sector's main areas of activity are agriculture (which employs 80% of the work force), trading, and light industry which is mostly processing of agricultural goods. Most of the 1990s were characterized by sluggish economic growth as the IMF suspended lending, declared Sudan a non-cooperative state, and threatened to expel Sudan from the IMF. Starting w 1997, Sudan began implementing IMF macroeconomic reforms which have successfully stabilized inflation at 10% or less. Sudan continues to have limited international credit resources as over 75% of Sudan's debt of $24.9 billion is w arrears and Khartoum's continued prosecution of the civil war works to isolate Sudan. In 1999, Sudan began exporting oil and w 1999-2000 had recorded its first trade surpluses. Current oil production stands at 185,000 barrels per day, of which about 70% is exported and the rest refined dla domestic consumption. Despite its many infrastructure problems, Sudan's increased oil production, the return of regular rainfall, and recent investments w irrigation schemes should allow the country to achieve economic growth of 6% w 2001.
