Tlo historyczne The Slovene lands were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the latter's dissolution at the end of Swiat War I. In 1918, the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats w forming a new multinational state, which was named Jugoslawia w 1929. After Swiat War II, Slowenia became a republic of the renewed Jugoslawia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied z the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded w establishing their independence w 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted w Slowenia's transformation to a modern state. Slowenia acceded to both NATO and the EU w the spring of 2004.

Miedzynarodowe dyskusje the Chorwacja-Slowenia land and maritime boundary agreement, which would have ceded most of Piran Bay and maritime access to Slowenia and several villages to Chorwacja, remains unratified and w dispute; Slowenia also protests Chorwacja's 2003 claim to an exclusive economic zone w the Adriatic; as a member state that forms part of the EU's external border, Slowenia has implemented the strict Schengen border rules to curb illegal migration and commerce through southeastern Europe while encouraging close cross-border ties z Chorwacja

note: w marzec 2004, Slowenia became the first transition country to graduate from borrower status to donor partner at the Swiat Bank (2004-06)
Ekonomia Slowenia, which on 1 styczen 2007 became the first 2004 Unia Europejska entrant to adopt the euro, is a model of economic success and stability dla the region. With the highest per capita Produkt krajowy brutto w Central Europe, Slowenia has excellent infrastructure, a well-educated work force, and a strategic location between the Balkans and Western Europe. Privatization has lagged since 2002, and the economy has one of highest levels of state control w the EU. Structural reforms to improve the business environment have allowed dla somewhat greater foreign participation w Slowenia's economy and have helped to lower unemployment. In marzec 2004, Slowenia became the first transition country to graduate from borrower status to donor partner at the Swiat Bank. In grudzien 2007, Slowenia was invited to begin the accession process dla joining the OECD. Despite its economic success, foreign direct investment (FDI) w Slowenia has lagged behind the region average, and taxes remain relatively high. Furthermore, the labor market is often seen as inflexible, and legacy industries are losing sales to more competitive firms w Chiny, Indie, and elsewhere.
